Staying near Warrington Hospital: a guide for NHS staff
A practical guide for NHS staff and placement students staying near Warrington Hospital: the trust, Halton Hospital, getting there, parking and shift tips.

If you’re coming to Warrington for a contract, a rotation or a clinical placement at the hospital, where you sleep matters almost as much as where you work. This guide covers the hospital, the trust that runs it, how to get there, and how to make a stay of a few weeks fit around your shifts.
Warrington Hospital and the trust that runs it
Warrington Hospital is on Lovely Lane, Warrington, WA5 1QG, a short way from the town centre. It is the borough’s main hospital, with emergency care, medicine, surgery, maternity and children’s services, along with cardiac, stroke and cancer care.
Since 1 April 2026 the hospital has been run by North Cheshire and Mersey NHS Foundation Trust. The trust was formed when Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals came together with Bridgewater Community Healthcare, so you may still see the old names on older letters, documents and web pages. The hospitals kept their names and addresses. The trust’s Warrington Hospital page has the site map and contact details.
As well as its two hospitals, the trust now runs community services from more than 70 hubs, clinics and health centres across Warrington and Halton. If your role or placement is in the community, check which base you’ll be working from, because it may not be either hospital.
Halton Hospital in Runcorn
The trust’s second hospital is Halton Hospital, on Hospital Way in Runcorn (WA7 2DA). It concentrates on planned surgery, diagnostics and outpatient clinics, and it is also home to the Urgent Treatment Centre for Runcorn. The two hospitals are about 10 miles apart, roughly 20 minutes by car, and the trust runs a shuttle bus between them that staff working across both sites can use. If your rota splits between Warrington and Halton, it helps to know that before you choose where to stay.
Getting to the hospital from the town centre
By car, Warrington Hospital is about 10 minutes from the town centre, and the trust points drivers to the A57.
You don’t need a car, though. According to the trust, Warrington Central and Warrington Bank Quay stations are both around a 15-minute walk from the hospital, and buses run from Warrington Interchange, the town’s bus station, to Lovely Lane. Routes and timetables change from time to time, so check the trust’s public transport page before your first shift.
For early starts and late finishes, plan the journey home as carefully as the journey in. A 15-minute walk after a 12-hour night in January is a different thing from the same walk at lunchtime in June.
Parking at the hospital
Warrington Hospital has several patient and visitor car parks around the site, with a one-way system to follow. The trust’s parking page covers both Warrington and Halton, including how payment works and the arrangements for Blue Badge holders. We don’t quote charges here because they change, so check that page for the current position.
If you’re staff or a student, ask your line manager, rota coordinator or placement lead how staff parking works before day one. It is easy to sort in advance and stressful to sort at seven in the morning.
Shifts, sleep and food
Sleeping after nights
Daytime sleep is the hardest part of a run of nights, and the room matters more than the bed. A few things help:
- Make the bedroom as dark as you can, and pack an eye mask anyway.
- Bring earplugs. Daytime noise is usually the problem, not the mattress.
- Put your phone on do not disturb and keep the same sleep window across the run.
- If you share, agree quiet hours with your housemate before the first night.
Cooking for yourself
A kitchen makes a long placement much easier. Batch cook on your days off, take proper meals in with you, and you won’t be relying on whatever is open at three in the morning. It also keeps costs down over several weeks compared with eating out.
Sharing with a colleague
Students often come on placement in pairs, and the University of Liverpool groups its medical students at Warrington this way for peer support. Two people on different shifts get on far better with two bedrooms and, ideally, two bathrooms, so nobody is queuing for the shower or waking the other up.
Clinical placements: what to sort before you arrive
The University of Liverpool is one university that sends students to Warrington Hospital. Its Warrington placement page lists rotations including care of the elderly, acute medicine, acute surgery, emergency medicine and critical care. If you’re from another university, or on a nursing, midwifery or allied health course, your placement team will confirm your site and arrangements.
Before you travel, it’s worth checking:
- Which site you’re based at (Warrington, Halton or a community base) and where to report on day one.
- How staff or student parking works, or your bus or walking route.
- Your rota, especially nights and weekends, so your accommodation suits it.
- Your full placement dates, so you can book the whole stay and avoid moving mid-rotation.
Where to stay
Both of our apartments are two-bedroom places in central Warrington, set up for stays of a few weeks rather than a night or two.
The Modern 2-Bed Flat with Flexible Beds is the one we’d suggest for NHS staff and placements. Each bedroom can be made up as a double or a twin, there are two bathrooms, a dedicated workspace for e-portfolios and revision, fast Wi-Fi and a kitchen. Self check-in with a lockbox means you don’t need to meet anyone when you arrive. ASDA is about 5 minutes’ walk and PureGym about a minute away, and there are discounts on longer stays.
The Stylish Central Warrington Stay has free parking, which helps if you drive to early or late shifts, along with a fully equipped kitchen and a bath for the end of a long week.
Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is by 11:00. For a placement-length stay, send us your dates through the contact page, or check availability and book directly. Our guide to long stays in Warrington covers settling in for several weeks, and the working in Warrington section of our town guide lists the other places our guests travel to.
